Your Plan B: A Gateway to Opportunities and Global Mobility

Malta Permanent Residence (MPRP) &

Malta Global Residence (GRP) for Indian Families

For many Indian families, life is a balance of opportunity and challenge — rich culture, dynamic business growth, and global connections, yet increasing concerns about long-term stability.

Factors worldwide such as air and water pollution in cities, limited access to quality healthcare, security risks, business environment, religious or social tensions and various other factors are motivating thoughtful families to establish a reliable Plan B.

Protect your family’s well-being, and safeguard your wealth, while keeping your base in India if you wish.

Why Indian Families Choose Malta?

More and more Indian HNW families are proactively creating a secure foundation for the future. Whether your focus is family safety, world-class education, or a globally trusted base for wealth and business, Malta is increasingly the destination of choice.

Indian families value Malta as a safe and reliable gateway to Europe, offering both stability and opportunity. Malta’s residency programs provide visa-free Schengen access, English-speaking schools and universities, and a trusted business environment within the EU.

The Temporary Residence Permit under MPRP issued in just four weeks allows families to secure their position quickly, while Malta’s cultural familiarity, education system, and tax regime make it a natural choice for Indian entrepreneurs and professionals looking for peace of mind and growth.

Having a stable, safe, respected base in Europe offers peace of mind — and Malta provides exactly that.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Clients from India

Do I have to move to Malta full-time?

No. There is no minimum stay required to maintain your residency.

Is Malta safe for families?

Malta is ranked among the safest countries in the world — with an excellent healthcare system, schools, and a friendly English-speaking community.

How do taxes work?

In case of non-domiciled individuals, foreign income not remitted to Malta is not taxed there. There’s no wealth or inheritance tax, and no foreign capital gains tax.

The MPRP doesn’t carry any tax grants and/or incentives. The applicable Maltese statutory tax provisions apply to this status.

Nonetheless as a general principle, the basic statutory provisions lay down that Maltese tax for non-Maltese-domiciled individuals is imposed on:

i. all chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta, and on chargeable income arising outside Malta that is remitted to Malta in the case of an individual who is resident in Malta, and

ii. only chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta in the case of an individual who is not resident in Malta.

Can I include my children and parents in the application?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, dependent children up to 29 years old, and even financially dependent parents and grandparents can be included under MPRP. While under the GRP program, the main applicant can include his/her spouse/partner, dependent children up to 25, parents & grandparents, siblings, household staff (conditions apply).

Can I travel freely in Europe with Malta residence?

Yes. MPRP and GRP allow visa-free travel within the Schengen Zone, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, in addition to an unlimited number of days in Malta.

Can I apply for Malta citizenship later?

Yes, you may apply for Maltese citizenship by naturalisation after at least 5 years of residence. This must include the last 12 months continuously in Malta, plus 4 additional years spread over the previous 6 years. You must also meet language, good conduct, and residency requirements, but approval is at the Minister’s discretion and not automatic.

Will I be taxed in Malta on income in India or elsewhere?

No. Maltese tax for non-Maltese-domiciled individuals is imposed on:

–             all chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta, and on chargeable income arising outside Malta that is remitted to Malta in the case of an individual who is resident in Malta, and

–             only chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta in the case of an individual who is not resident in Malta.

Can I keep my Indian passport?

Yes — these are residency programs, so your Indian citizenship remains unchanged.

Will I lose my Indian citizenship if I later obtain Malta citizenship?

If you later apply for Maltese citizenship, note that Malta allows multiple citizenships. However, India does not allow dual citizenship. If you acquire another citizenship, you must surrender your Indian passport. However, you can apply for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status — a permanent Indian residency allowing you to live and work in India indefinitely with a lifelong entry visa. OCI is not dual citizenship and does not grant political rights.

Will I need to travel to Malta during the process?

Under the Malta Permanent Residence Program (MPRP) only once — for biometrics. Under the Malta Global Residence Program (GRP) program – twice – for biometrics and to collect residence cards. We handle the rest.

What happens if I spend most of my time outside Malta?

Your residency is still valid as long as you maintain the property and financial requirements.

Can I work or run a business in Malta with residency?

Yes. Both MPRP and GRP give you the right to live in Malta, own or run businesses, and receive dividends. Holders of MPRP and GRP can also obtain an employment licence, as required — subject to a standard review process.
