Malta Global Residence (GRP) for South African Families

Gain peace of mind – secure the safety and wellbeing of your family, without leaving home today.

For many South African families, life is full of contrast, vibrant culture and opportunity, beautiful nature, yet there is an increasing concern about long-term stability.

Concerns about power outages, safety, infrastructure strain, and the future of children’s education are prompting thoughtful families to seek a secure backup plan. This doesn’t mean everyone leaving South Africa — it means having a Plan B, while some families choose to relocate.

Malta offers just that: a peaceful, English-speaking base in Europe that allows you to protect what matters most, while keeping your life in South Africa exactly where it is, if you choose.

Why South Africans Choose Malta?

South African families are increasingly seeking a safe and stable Plan B abroad. Malta offers exactly that: a secure, English-speaking base in Europe with visa-free Schengen access, strong education options, excellent healthcare, and a Mediterranean lifestyle with over 300 sunny days a year.

Concerns around safety, infrastructure, and the future of children’s opportunities are driving many South Africans to explore Malta’s Permanent Residence or Global Residence Programs — allowing them to secure a plan B for their families while still keeping their lives in South Africa intact if preferred.

Having a stable, safe, respected base in Europe offers peace of mind — and Malta provides exactly that.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Clients from South Africa

Do I have to move to Malta full-time?

No. There is no minimum stay required to maintain your residency.

Is Malta safe for families?

Malta is ranked among the safest countries in the world — with an excellent healthcare system, schools, and a friendly English-speaking community.

How do taxes work?

The MPRP doesn’t carry any tax grants and/or incentives. The applicable Maltese statutory tax provisions apply to this status.

Nonetheless as a general principle, the basic statutory provisions lay down that Maltese tax for non-Maltese-domiciled individuals is imposed on:

  1. all chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta, and on chargeable income arising outside Malta that is remitted to Malta in the case of an individual who is resident in Malta, and
  2. only chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta in the case of an individual who is not resident in Malta.
Can I include my children and parents in the application?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, dependent children up to 29 years old, and even financially dependent parents and grandparents can be included under MPRP. While under the GRP program, the main applicant can include his/her spouse/partner, dependent children up to 25, parents & grandparents, siblings, household staff (conditions apply).

Can I travel freely in Europe with Malta residence?

Yes. MPRP and GRP allow visa-free travel within the Schengen Zone, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, in addition to an unlimited number of days in Malta.

Can I apply for Malta citizenship later?

Yes, you may apply for Maltese citizenship by naturalisation after at least 5 years of residence. This must include the last 12 months continuously in Malta, plus 4 additional years spread over the previous 6 years. You must also meet language, good conduct, and residency requirements, but approval is at the Minister’s discretion and not automatic.

Will I be taxed in Malta on income in South Africa or elsewhere?

No. Maltese tax for non-Maltese-domiciled individuals is imposed on:

–             all chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta, and on chargeable income arising outside Malta that is remitted to Malta in the case of an individual who is resident in Malta, and

–             only chargeable income and capital gains arising in Malta in the case of an individual who is not resident in Malta.

Can I keep my South African passport?

Yes — these are residency programs, so your South African citizenship remains unchanged.

Will I lose my South African citizenship if I later obtain Malta citizenship?

If you later apply for Maltese citizenship, note that Malta allows multiple citizenships. South African citizens may hold dual citizenship — but if you are over 18, you must apply to the Department of Home Affairs to retain your South African citizenship before acquiring any new citizenship.

Will I need to travel to Malta during the process?

Under the Malta Permanent Residence Program (MPRP) only once — for biometrics. Under the Malta Global Residence Program (GRP) program – twice – for biometrics and to collect residence cards. We handle the rest.

What happens if I spend most of my time outside Malta?

Your residency is still valid as long as you maintain the property and financial requirements.

Can I work or run a business in Malta with residency?

Yes. Both MPRP and GRP give you the right to live in Malta, own or run businesses, and receive dividends. Holders of MPRP and GRP can also obtain an employment licence, as required — subject to a standard review process.
