Portugal Residence Permit For Investment Programme
Also known as the ‘Golden Visa’, the Portugal Residence Permit for Investment programme enables third country citizens to obtain residency in Portugal through investment. The application process is straightforward with an average timeframe of 8-10 months and may include financially dependant family members. Investors can apply for the programme having only one physical visit to Portugal with a minimal stay requirement of 14 days for every two year period.
Investors are eligible to apply for permanent residence or citizenship after five years at the end of the programme. Portuguese citizenship allows freedom of movement within the European Union.

Investment Value
The main investments for the Portugal Residence Permit for Investment Programme must be completed before the application is submitted and maintained for a minimum period of five years.
Transfer of Capital:
- €250K for Artistic production or recovery or maintenance of Portuguese Cultural Heritage. Can be reduced to €200K if the project is in a low density area.
- €500K for investment funds or venture capital funds to capitalise Portuguese companies.
- €500K for scientific or technological research through public or private institutions in Portugal. Can be reduced to €400K if in a low density area.
Job Creation:
- The investment results in the creation of at least 10 full-time jobs or 8 if the business is in a low density area.
Or
- Together with the creation of at least 5 permanent job positions, transfer a minimum capital amount of €500K, in order to incorporate a company headquartered in Portugal.
Procedure & Timeline
1-3 MONTHS
INVESTMENT
The investment must be completed before applying.
To start the process:
– Open a bank account in Portugal
-Transfer funds into the account
-Finalise the investment
– Obtain a Police Clearance Report
2 -3 MONTHS
PRE-APPROVAL
Online submission of the application. The documents need to be pre-approved by the Portuguese Immigration & Borders Service (SEF).
BIOMETRIC DATA
Once an appointment date is given by the SEF, the main applicant and family members must visit Portugal to submit their biometric data to complete the application.
The appointment date may be set between 1-3 months from the pre-approval stage.
4 - 7 MONTHS
APPROVAL
The SEF processes and grants the Residence Permit.
