May 2025, Malta has assumed the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe — for the fourth time in its 60 year history.
The Committee of Ministers is the Council of Europe’s decision-making body, it brings together the foreign ministers of 46 member states (or their permanent representatives in Strasbourg). The Committee of Ministers plays a central role in shaping Europe’s commitment to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, presented the key priorities for the upcoming six-month Maltese Presidency.
These priorities include safeguarding children’s rights, addressing violence and discrimination, empowering young people, and continuing strong support for Ukraine.
Malta’s leadership in this role presents a unique opportunity for Malta to offer strategic guidance, to strengthen the external outreach efforts of the Council of Europe in European and international affairs.
The presidency runs from May til November 2025.
