It is an excellent choice for remote workers who want to enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle while remaining fully employed or self-employed abroad. It gives digital nomads the freedom to live legally in Malta, while continuing to work for foreign employers or clients.

Malta also offers easy access to major European cities, making it ideal for digital nomads who need to travel for business, networking, or leisure. Weekend trips to Italy, Spain, France, and other Schengen destinations are quick and convenient.
The Nomad Residence Permit, allows third-country nationals to live in Malta while working remotely using telecommunications, for up to one year, with the possibility of three renewals, bringing the total stay to four years.
To qualify, applicants must show a minimum gross income of €42,000 per year.
Applicants must fall under one of these three categories:
- Employed by a company registered outside Malta
- Conducting business activities for a foreign company as a partner or shareholder
- Providing freelance or consulting services to clients based outside Malta
Permit holders are generally expected to be physically present in Malta for at least 5 months per year to remain eligible for renewals.
Holders of the Nomad Residence Permit are issued a residence card in Malta, which enables visa-free travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Dependants can also be included under the programme, typically covering spouses or long-term partners, dependent minor children and dependent adult children allowing families to benefit from the same mobility and lifestyle advantages.
Applicants must provide a valid employment contract, a health insurance policy, a rental or purchase agreement.
